As part of
a Cabin Exchange 2020 reccee day we visited Tradeston, on the
south side of Glasgow. Our aim was to trade something with the local
businesses as part of the research for working in this location. I ended
up
meeting Sly, he owns a car wash, which he runs from a porta cabin. We
chatted for a while and
I proposed to Sly that he could wash my bike in
exchange for helping him out washing the next vehicle that came by. My
bike got a pretty good seeing to with a pressure hose and lots of soap.
We
hung out, only to be visited by a huge Arctic lorry, so now it was my
turn.
We spent the next hour washing out the back of the lorry, sweeping away
the debris, getting it ready for its next load.
From discussing
this project with various people after the event, many
have commented on the fact that I could have washed by own bike in half
the time. Of course this is true, if this had been the case I would not
have
had the interactions with Sly and spent time taking part in an action
that
was different from my usual daily tasks. I highly recommend, spending
a
spare afternoon offering your time to somebody in exchange for their
skills, it’s certainly opens you to different perspectives and ways
of
working. Thanks to Sly for a very enjoyable few hours.
