re-claimed bikes from landfill:
I decided that
I would explore our throw away culture and use it as a
foundation to collect
dis-used bicycles. i visited the landfill site in
maryhill and met george. he said that it ould be no problem to collect
a few bikes and i should come back in a couple of weeks. i continued
with the search, hired a van and went back later. george had
collected ten bicycles, they were of course various shapes, sizes and
ride-able conditions. we brought them back to the gallery and began
to install the ‘glasgow bike library’. one of the benefits
of using
broken bikes was the opportunity to learn how to fix them. they also
provided a great resource for spare parts, many people came by and
repaired their own bikes from the left-overs.
people often think that
bikes are expensive, if you are in need of a
bike check out the free-cycle web site www.freecycle.org or the
local paper. also just ask around, its pretty amazing how many are
left on the street without being locked up. if you have a bike that
you don’t use, advertise it and provide someone with a healthy
alternative to navigating the city streets.
