Environmental Criteria

Our aim was to promote green alternatives create awareness and to reduce where possible the carbon footprint of the project.
With this in mind we set in place environmental criteria for the development and production of Bluss.
As much as this criteria being mission and set of rules for us to work with, we knew it would be an important learning experience for everyone involved in planning of Bluss.

Evaluation
:
We have evaluated the Bluss project and environmental criteria in depth, Below is a brief summery of this evaluation:

Travel
Contributing Artists:
All artists traveling to take part in the project were required to avoid short distance air travel and thus traveled to and from Fykse by land or sea.

Travel during the Bluss two-week process April 7th-19th :
We reduced our car travel and collected equipment from local towns in Bulk shops and in as little journeys as we could possibly make.

Audience traveling to Bluss April 19th :
In regards to the regional audience attending the event we provided public transport to and from the event by Buss and boat.

Power
We researched and considered various alternative and renewable approaches to powering the art works that would be part of the Bluss event. The principal was that the renewable energy devices made would be used to charge Batteries that then would be used to power the various equipment. Two bicycle generators constructed for the event, to read more about this click here.

Materials and resources
We encouraged awareness of the materials and produce used for production of Bluss and aimed to recycle, borrow and source green materials where possible. We attempted to reduce where possible any waste produced at the event.
We are currently looking into finding a further use for the equipment we have left over from the event, in particular the renewable energy equipment (the bike generators, caravan batteries and inverters.)We made the majority of the advertising and correspondence paperless, and where necessary use recycled paper.
The Bluss marketing team designed various small-scale innovative, multifunctional and environmentally friendly flyers and invitations.

Fykse
We asked the local Fykse community to turn out there lights during the event, this was as much for light pollution as it was to counter balance the amount of power being used for the event in Fykse.

Summery
A key factor in ensuring a successful implementation of environmental responsibility is that principles/guidelines need to be  a strong foundation of the project. These guildines need to be collectively discussed, agreed upon and implemented in the first planning stages of a project. And furthermore the majority of the people involved in planning and running the project will promote and put into practice the guidelines that are set in place. In some cases aspects of the Environmental criteria were overlooked due to time constraints and quick decision making. We have come to the conclusion that for a temporary one-night event it makes more sense to utilize local resources available (borrow equipment and use local mains power available) than spend time, money and resources on small-scale hand made renewable energy.

However we stress if the technical skills, intuition and finances are available it would be more than possible to power a light event by using renewable energy. However it is important to consider the scale and long-term use of such systems and what makes the most practical sense in specification to the environment the event/festival is to be held in.
We reduced where possible any waste produced at the event. In regards to the Bluss marketing we came to a similar conclusion to the equipment, we found the most effective and economical method was to use resources that where already available at hand - such as buying advertising space in the local and regional newspapers and creating general press coverage for the event. We are currently looking into finding a further use for the equipment we have left over from the event, in particular the renewable energy equipment (the bike generators, caravan batteries and inverters.)
We found the most effective solution to reduce the carbon emissions and waste created was to borrow and recycle from local resources available, which turned out to be plentiful and easy to access.
