Garden & Methane Digester
During a residency at Berwick Gymnasium Gallery I researched issues surrounding food production and energy.
In response to the local landscape and the calendar of the residency itself (beginning in October and ending with an exhibition in July) I decided to develop an organic kitchen garden mirroring the internal space of the Gymnasium gallery. The vegetable and flowerbeds were taken from the markings on the Gymnasium floor. Within the gallery itself I constructed a device called a methane digester that is capable of converting waste organic matter (garden and kitchen waste as well as faecal matter) into methane gas which could then be used to cook the produce from the garden. Hence the title ‘Feedback Loop’. I wanted the work to suggest that the whole concept of ‘waste’ is a misnomer everything has value and can be used.
